Sidewalks

Edgewater's City Code requires residents to maintain sidewalks in front of their homes. These existing sidewalks must be free and clear of obstacles, and the surface needs to be easily passable for everyone.

Sidewalks and the ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has a set of guidelines to ensure that sidewalks are constructed to a set of standards that ensures accessibility for the disabled. IF they-re not accessible, sidewalks are one of the most common areas that can pose great challenges and dangers to the blind, to anyone in a wheelchair, or to anyone using crutches if they're not accessible.

Under Title II of the ADA, public entities are required to perform a self-evaluation of their current services, policies, and practices regarding accessibility.  The goal of the self-evaluation is to verify that, in managing its programs and facilities, Edgewater is providing accessibility and not adversely affecting the full participation of individuals with disabilities.

The intent of the ADA self-evaluation is to review Edgewater's entire public program, including all facilities on public property and within public right-of-ways and to identify any obstacles or barrier to accessibility that need to be addressed.
